I am currently on sabbatical with the Advanced Internet Research Group (AIR) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). I will be returning to LBNL in August of 2003.

I started designing and implementing high-speed parallel storage systems, but I soon found that I could easily build a system that would break most high-speed networks. Click here for a brief overview of one of the systems that I helped develop, or if you want more info you can check out my Thesis. Having found that it was so easy to break a network I quickly moved into the realm of building networks that would stand up to the onslaught of data. A few of the early projects that I worked on were BAGnet, MAGIC and NTON to name a few. I've moved on now into the area of exploring TCP, particularly in the context of Large Scale Networks (LSN). Click here to see why I think this is such a big problem. As of late I've been working with the web100 people on a new project called net100 that applies some of the techniques that can help improve performance over LSNs to real world applications, you can see some of my progress here.

Over the last couple of years at LBNL I have developed several web based interfaces to work with various other projects here at LBNL. Some of the more notable are; an interface to the ISS, and an interface to a workstation based video camera. I am also in charge of developing and maintaining our groups ATM/Gigabit/FDDI/etc. networks.

Some of my research and development interests are in the areas of:

Previous Positions

Computer Science Lab Manager: SFSU 1990-1992

Laboratory Manager for the Computer Science Dept.

Managed the University's Computer Science Laboratory. My responsibilities included helping design and implement the network infrastructure for the computer science department. I also was responsible for maintaining all of the labs computers and ensuring that they were available for use at all times. This involved managing a small team of sysadmins for the various types of machines (NeXT, Sun, HP, VAX, etc), and putting together staffing for the different computer labs.

Education
